Question With Answer About Turbine And Compressor In Process Industries.

The turbine is a mechanical device or mechanical mechanism that converts thermal energy to mechanical/kinetic energy. In Petrochemicals, Chemicals, Power Generation, Ammonia, Oil and Gas, Manufacturing Industries, the steam turbine is used as the driving system or driver. Such as a steam turbine used to drive a  power generator in the power plant.

A compressor is a mechanical device through which increased the pressure and density of a gas or vapor. Many types of compressors are used in the field especially in the industry, Such as; Compressor Rotary, Compressor, Compression System, Air Compressor, AC Compressor, Air Dryer Compressor, Refrigeration Compressor, etc.

Already on my site Tech Process, there are already two topics related to What Is Compressor And Compression System? Working Principle Of Compressor. and The Steam Turbine, And How It Works?  is discussed about compressors and turbines.

Let us today discuss some of the issues related to compressors and turbines that I have shared with you some of the knowledge I have gained from working on compressors and turbines that I have seen in real life.

An important part of A Turbines and Compressors is the Turning Gear which plays a very important role in turning the turbines and compresses shaft or rotating parts during startup and shutdown.

# Now let's see why turning gear is used in a turbine and a compressor?

Turning gear is used in a turbine for rotating the shaft at the time of warm-up of the turbine or when its rotor comes to standstill after any trip for the protection of the shaft from deformation due to un-uniform temperature in its surface at that moment when the rotor is at hot. Another thing to note here is that before turning on the Turning gear, you must make sure that the lube oil circulation of the turbine is turned on. If the rotor or shaft is not rotated evenly during the warm-up or cooldown of the turbine, the turbine rotor or shaft will bend.

# Now let's know why do you warm up the turbine before starting?

We warm up the turbine before starting for avoiding the thermal shock experienced by the cooling device at the time when a larger volume of steam carrying high temperature gets entranced suddenly in its causing crack.

# Now we will see how many types of bearings are used in compressors and turbines? What is the function?

There are three types of bearing used in a turbine.

  • Axial Bearing,

  • Radial Bearing,

  • Thrust Bearing.

At first, let's know what's the meaning of Axial Thrust. When the thrust is experienced by a turbine of the compressor, acting along the axis is called axial thrust.

The function of thrust bearing is to fix the position of the turbine or compressor rotor in the axial direction and take up the unbalanced axial thrust (Residual Thrust) of the balance piston (Drum).

#What is the function of Journal Bearing?

The function of Journal bearing is to support the shaft or Rotor. It consists of a lower and upper half shell. The shells are lapped with white metal and located by means of pins.

If there is insufficient lube oil flow in the bearing or generates excessive friction, the white metal of the journal bearing protects the rotor or shaft.

When a turbine or compressor rotates on the oil bed or oil film between the bearings and rotor, the journal bearing holds the rotor or shaft in the correct position. So that the rotor or shaft is not unbalanced.

# What is the function of Steam Admission Valve and Emergency Stop Valve (ESV) in a turbine?

The function of the steam admission or regulating valve is to regulate the steam of the turbine as per its desired speed. Emergency Stop Valve (ESV) is used before Steam Admission Valve in a turbine to save the Machine by cutting steam completely at the time of its abnormal condition. When the turbine is made shut by pushing the Emergency Stop Button or when the machine is tripped for other causes according to their predetermined set point. Emergency Stop Valve (ESV) is closed quickly and completely by damping the control oil.
